Vaccines help your loyal companions fight off illnesses. At Elmwood Veterinary Hospital we are passionate about giving your pet the protection they need and so we provide both core and non-core vaccinations for your furry friends. Core vaccines are mandated by law. This is because of the severity of the disease your pets could catch without them and how easily they can spread to other species.
What are core and non-core vaccines for my puppy or dog?
Core vaccines protect against illnesses that have a higher level of transmission to other pets and illnesses that can be spread to humans. Core vaccines are:
1. Rabies
2. Canine Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (DHPP).
Non-core vaccines are not mandatory because not every pet is exposed to the disease. Non-core vaccines are:
1. Canine influenza
2. Leptospirosis
3. Lyme
4. Bordetella
When should my puppy be vaccinated?
Your puppy should start vaccinations at 8-weeks-old. They should continue vaccinations every 3-4 weeks until they are between 16-19 weeks of age.
How often should my adult dog be vaccinated?
At Elmwood Veterinary Hospital we recommend periodic booster shots after the last round of puppy shots. These shots are administered once per year or once every three years. To prevent over-vaccinations we only recommend non-core vaccines based on your pet’s lifestyle and surroundings.
Will my pet experience any side effects?
Some side effects are to be expected but they are minor. Your pet may have soreness at the injection site, lethargy or loss of appetite. All of these effects can last up to 48 hours.
