What is spay and neuter surgery?

Spaying refers to the removal of the female reproductive organs while neutering removes male reproductive organs. Both surgeries prevent pets from reproducing. The surgery is commonly referred to as getting your pet “fixed.”

Why should I consider spay or neuter surgery for my pet?

There are many reasons why you should consider spaying or neutering your pet. Here are a few:

1. You can prevent unwanted pregnancies and help decrease stray animal populations.

2. Spay and neuter surgery eliminates the risk of certain types of cancer. Pets that are not spayed or neutered can develop prostate or breast cancer and uterine infections in the future.

3. Pets are less likely to develop behavioural problems. Males that are not neutered tend to be more aggressive, or spray on/urinate on their surroundings. Your pet is also less likely to roam around and wander off as the heat cycle has ended.

My pet is older. Is it too late to have them spayed or neutered?

No! Though we recommend spay or neuter surgery around 6-months-old, older pets can still get the surgery. Six months is the recommended age to prevent unwanted pregnancies as that is when pets reach puberty and begin the heat cycle. Your older pet can still benefit from the surgery.
